The Feldenkrais Method® is a brain-centered movement therapy that helps people of all ages move with ease and pleasure. It is named after Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904 - 1984), a renowned physicist and judo master who had a knee injury so severe that he was sometimes confined to bed for weeks at a time.
In his search for a cure, Dr. Feldenkrais immersed himself in child development, psychology, neurology, anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. He learned how to walk again without pain, but didn't stop at serving his own needs. Intrigued by the healing ability of the nervous system, he worked over decades to develop a method that would help countless others.
Dr. Feldenkrais's clients included Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, anthropologist Margaret Mead, director Peter Brook, conductor and composer Igor Markevitch and violinist Yehudi Menuhin. But his work was not limited to improving the performance of high-functioning people. He was keenly interested in helping individuals severely limited by debilitating injuries and neurological issues like stroke, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. In cases where conventional medicine could not help, Feldenkrais vastly improved the quality of life for children and adults, helping them learn or re-learn functions necessary for daily life like crawling, standing and walking.
His successes seemed magical, but Dr. Feldenkrais's work was solidly grounded in a principle that is now widely accepted in neuroscience: that the brain can grow new cells and make new connections at any age.
What does the brain have to do with it? As it turns out, everything! The brain is the control center for everything one does and thinks. By using attention, slow movement and specific movement sequences, the Feldenkrais Method creates positive changes at the neurological level, both in movement and in thought. The result is easier, more efficient movement that helps one function better, think more clearly and creatively, and ultimately enjoy a more fulfilling life.
